Justification/Comments: |
We need a Class 1 vessel to carry a large party into very high winds and rough seas. The request for 4 weeks on station is because of the probability of finding the high winds we need. East of Newfoundland, for example, we may find winds above 17 m/s 5-8 days out of 28 in DJF. In the Gulf of Tehuanapec it might be 3-5 days in this same season. In both cases, the high winds come with synoptic systems at ~weekly intervals. Staying out 4 weeks seems the minimum to ensure a handful of high-wind encounters. The same is true of the Southern Ocean, but the season there would be April through August. |
