Dates To Avoid: |
The rainy/storm season should be avoided (May to September; August and Sept. are particularly problematic). Hurricane season in the Gulf of California is late summer and early fall; most hurricanes are falling into August/September/early October. The currently chosen dates, Nov. 15-29 [already in the 2018 ship schedule for Atlantis] are fine. |

Justification/Comments: |
We need the Alvin/Atlantis to accomplish our research goals. Given the number of sediment cores we need to retrieve, and the in-situ instrumentation that we have to deploy, ALVIN is the best platform for our program. The target area is already well mapped [most recently with SENTRY, Dec. 2016], allowing efficient navigation and sampling at dive targets. ROVs are unsuitable due to much more limited sampling and carrying capacity. AUV Sentry was added to the cruise in February 2018, to map hydrothermal plumes in fine 3D resolution around the previously mapped hydrothermal sites. |

Requested End Port: |

Port Comments: |
The current plan by WHOI for cruise AT42-05 is to mobilize in Guaymas, and to demobilize in Manzanillo. Regardless of the start port, it is imperative that science equipment and most science samples be loaded and unloaded in a US port, to avoid a repeat of the 2016 Mexican shipping disaster. At the time of updating this shiptime request [March 8, 2018], WHOI plans to load chemicals at WHOI in September, and lab gear in San Juan, Puerto Rico in October; samples and gear are offloaded post-cruise in San Diego. |

Foreign Clearance Required: |
Yes |
Mexico
|
Foreign Clearance Comments: |
Foreign Clearance Comments: Mexican clearance will be required, also for collecting microbial mat and sediment specimens. One or two Mexican observers/scientists will be members of the cruise party. On the Dec. 2016 cruise, the necessary Mexican clearance could be obtained at last but it did require more time than the previous expeditions did. |

|
Instrumentation Requested: |
Dynamic Positioning Multibeam Radioisotope use - briefly describe
|
Instrumentation Comments: |
We will be doing radioisotope tracer work using weak beta emitters [tritium, C14, S33] in the isotope van - as we have done many times in the past on board the Atlantis. We may also use non-radioactive isotopes [C13, N15]. |
Ancil Facilities Requested: |
Sentry Alvin Radioisotope Lab Van
|
Ancil Facility Comments: |
SENTRY is requested, and has been approved by NSF, for high-resolution mapping of hydrothermal plumes around the previously mapped hydrothermal targets in Guaymas Basin. Since Sentry is already placed on RV Atlantis before and after the Guaymas cruise, no additional shipping is required; Sentry stays where it is and it put to good use during the Guaymas Basin cruise. |
