Ship Time Request Overview

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Summary of Field Work: Multi-investigator, multi-national seabed characterization experiment.

This work will support objectives of the ONR ocean acoustics program relating to the acoustics of shallow waters overlying soft sediment. There are three general themes including: understanding the physical mechanisms controlling propagation; estimating properties of the sediment and quantifying uncertainty; and assessing the performance of inversion methods and geoacoustic models. A multidisciplinary team with expertise in acoustics, oceanography, signal processing, and sediment processes have been invited to participate in an experiment to address these themes. The location will be the New England mud patch, south of Nantucket, MA extending approximately 30 km east and 11 km north of 40º 25.5’ N, 70º 46.5’ W. Acoustic propgation and scattering experiments will be conducted with a variety of different source and receiver configurations designed to meet scientific objectives. Several moored vertical and horizontal receiver arrays, drifting arrays, and at least one towed array have been proposed. Oceanographic moorings and other instruments in numbers and configurations required to support the acoustics will also be deployed. The use of gliders and AUVs has also been proposed. As the objectives are focused on seabed acoustics, we propose to carry out the experiment in late March - early May 2016 when the water colum should be well mixed.
Summary of Facility Requirements: Deck space and lab space to support deployment of multiple vertical and vertical arrays for acoustics and oceanographic measurements. Ability to tow acoustic sources such as the J-15-3. Ability to tow an array such as the FORA. Detailed deck space, laboratory, and berthing requirements are being gathered at this time and will be provided in the near future. It is anticipated that a minimum of 30 days at sea will be required to meet scientific objectives and so 45 days will be requested to include contingencies for bad weather.
