Ship Time Request Overview

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Project Description and Facility Requirements
Project Web Page:
Summary of Field Work: A 12-d cruise is planned, crossing the Gulf of Maine on the line between Portland, ME towards Yarmouth, NS then turning SSE and steaming to Bermuda. We will be sampling water for coccolithophores and performing isotope incubations with various dissolved organic carbon compounds and fluorescently labeled bacteria. We will use a flow cytometer to separate the coccolithophores from the rest of the phytoplankton and examine their ability to take up take up this DOC as well as bacterial-sized particles in a mixotrophic fashion.
Summary of Facility Requirements: We will need a CTD/rosette system plus sufficient space on deck for a radioisotope van plus the Bigelow Laboratory flow-cytometer van (8'x8'x20' container).
Summary of other requirements or comments: We will plan on visiting 7 stations enroute to Bermuda, occupying each for about 1d. The total steaming time would be slightly less than 5d.
