Ship Time Request Overview

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Project Description and Facility Requirements
Project Web Page:
Summary of Field Work: We are requesting 17 (15 science days, 2 days in port MOB/DeMOB) days ship time each in summer 2018 and summer 2019. Departing and returning from a port on the Gulf of Mexico. We will study the temporal change in nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients as a water mass moves offshore.

We will identify the water mass we will study over the shelf/slope transition based on surface properties and track the water mass over the next 13 days by following a Argos-Apex float drifting at the surface that we will deploy within the water mass. We will deploy and recover floating PIT traps every 4 days (3x per cruise). Each day we will sample using a CTD/rosette, with bottles triggered at 6 depths between the surface and 150 m. At the end of the cruise we will recover the float.

Each day we will also be conducting experiments using radioactive tracers in deck incubators.
Summary of Facility Requirements: For a successful project we require full use of the ships available facilities including: CTD/rosette with 24 Niskin bottles, underway Temp/salinity/MET data, ADCP, flow through sea water (for on-deck incubators), sufficient deck space for three, flow-through incubators, compressed air, a 20' radioisotope van (with hook-ups) equipped with a scintillation counter, uncontaminated seawater for in- laboratory analyses, ultra pure deionized water, lab space inside for wet sample processing (filtration), a -20 freezer, a -80 freezer, and a chemical fume hood.

We request a res tech to help with the CTD, PIT trap, and ARGOS float deployments.

Our science party (and bunk needs) will be at least 11. We plan to bring as many as 5 collaborators, working on complementary projects, who would be willing to help with equipment deployment.
