Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

  Project Information
Project Title: Collaborative Research: Nitrogen fixation, nutrient supply, and biological production in the Gulf of Mexico Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: Joseph Montoya, GaTech Project Institution: GaTech
Project ID: 101947 Version #: 5
Date Submitted: 2/17/2009 9:16:00 AM Created By: Joseph Montoya

Funding Agencies: NSF/OCE/BIO - 0928495 - Funded
Summary of Field Work: We propose two cruises to the Gulf of Mexico. These cruises will allow us to survey waters previously undersampled with respect to the diversity and activity of N2-fixing organisms. We will focus on areas affected by the MIssissippi plume as well as mesoscale features. At sea, we will collect water samples for analysis and experimentation using a CTD/rosette as well as pump systems for surface water. We will carry out an extensive suite of experiments to measure the rates of N2-fixation as well as the diversity of diazotrophs in these waters.
Summary of Facility Requirements: We need a CTD/rosette, a mocness system, a hydrowire for deploying nets, and provision for deploying hand nets from on deck. We also need deck space for flowing seawater incubators and lab space for filtrations, nutrient chemistry, microscopy, and other lab analyses.
Summary of other requirements and comments: T. Villareal's group plans to sample Trichodesmium and large diatoms using SCUBA.

Description of Repeating cruise requirements:
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
We want to sample the Gulf of Mexico during the summer, when large populations of N2-fixing organisms are known to be present and the Mississippi plume tends to extend the furthest offshore. We request the Seward Johnson b/c we have extensive experience on the RVSJ and it is well suited for our work.

Explanation of Science Party Requirements and Technician Requirements From prior experience, the absolute minimum size science party for our core work at sea is about 12 persons and 18 is typical. We have a strong record of involving collaborators in our work at sea and typically have members of at least 3 or 4 outside labs join us at sea.

Explain Instrumentation or Capability
requirements that could affect choice
of ship in scheduling.

We will carry out stable isotope (15N, 13C) tracer experiments. We will need a meter mocness for zooplankton sampling. If hold space isn't available for our shipping crates and other gear, we'll need a storage van on deck. T. Villareal's group plans to sample Trichodesmium and large diatoms using SCUBA.
