Summary of Field Work: |
We will deploy 9 transponders for GPSA measurements to measure strain accumulation at three sites south of the Aleutian Peninsula. A waveglider system will be used to survey the transponders on the seafloor. The transponders will be recovered two years later. We will deploy a waveglider twice to determine the exact position of the sites two years apart to measure the rate of strain accumulation across the Aleutian subduction zone to better constrain seismic tsunami risk. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
We require several CTD casts and a crane to lift the transponders, waveglider and benchmarks over the side of the ship and to recover the transponders and waveglider at the end of the deployment. We require a multibeam sonar to place the transponders onto appropriate sea floor regions. |
Summary of other requirements and comments: |
We originally specified the Sikuliaq because it is ported in Alaska, but any ship with crane, CTD and multibeam sonar would work.
The first year GPSA deployments can be done in conjunction with the Alaska OBS community experiment during the deployment leg for the LDEO OBSs by adding three days to this leg. This assumes the R/V Sally Ride or larger ship is used. |

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: |
will be leaving transponders out until at least august 2022 |
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
The ship will be used to recover a waveglider deployed roughly one month before the cruise to make the GPSA observations. The GPSA measurements require fairly good weather, so it is not possible to deploy the system too early in the summer. The ship will also recover nine transponders. |
