Summary of Field Work: |
Examining connections between the phenomic and genomic characteristics of viruses. The work will consist of water column sampling of the N. Pacific sub-tropical gyre using a standard CTD rosette instrumentation package and Niskin bottles. Samples will be processed on board and then snap frozen for subsequent shoreside molecular genetic analyses of virio- and bacterioplankton communities. We will also conduct three day deck incubations in ambient flowing seawater incubation troughs. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
e will need a CTD/rosette, ADCP, sufficient deck space and flowing seawater incubation troughs for incubation experiments, a zodiac for shoreside logistical operations. |

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: |
Repeated cruise intervals are not required |
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
For several reasons, the Kilo Moana is the ideal choice for this work. 1) The Moana routinely works in these waters. 2) The ship is an ideal size for the scientific party and has ample wet and dry lab space. 3) A member of our collaborative team is located at the University of Hawaii which eases the logistical burden of mobilization and demobilization. |
