Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Summary of Field Work: We will undertake trace metal clean water column sampling at the BATS site, using trace-metal CTD rosette and McLane pumps, for shipboard sample processing. We propose that this work will be undertaken together with five of the regular BATS program cruises, by adding one day to each of these cruises in order to accommodate our sampling work.
Summary of Facility Requirements: The number of investigators and equipment required would be suitable to combine with the BATS program cruises that are typically carried out on R/V Atlantic Explorer, Bermuda to Bermuda. We need to be able to deploy trace metal clean CTD-rosette and McLane pumps (5 depths), and to process samples in shipboard clean laboratory van.
Summary of other requirements and comments: We have discussed including our work in the BATS cruises (with one day added) with BATS PI Rod Johnson, who is a co-PI on this proposal.

Requested Ship, Operating Days and Dates
Year: 2020 Ship/Facility: Atlantic Explorer
Optimum Start Date: 2/15/2020 Dates to Avoid: Sampling at BATS site is best accomplished in conjunction with regular BATS program cruises, as discussed with BATS PI. We propose to add one day to a regular BATS cruises (ideally in February or March 2020) to accommodate our sampling needs.

Repeating Cruise?
(within same year)
No Interval:   # of Cruises: 1

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: Research focuses on seasonal-scale changes in iron distribution, so cruise is nominally chosen to coincide with BATS cruise in Feb-Mar (late winter) 2020 (this would follow 4 similar cruises in 2019).
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
We have chosen to piggy-back our sampling on BATS cruises, in order to benefit from core and ancillary BATS program data, and use same ship (either RV Atlantic Explorer or RV Endeavor).
