Summary of Field Work: |
The overall goal of EXPORTS is to predict the export, fate and carbon cycle impacts of global ocean Net Primary Production (NPP) from satellite and other observations. To do this EXPORTS needs to sample the carbon export and remineralization pathways over multiple ecosystem states. The productive and energetic North Atlantic field work aims to contrasts the field deployment done North Pacific during the late summer of 2018. Both end members are needed to complete the science goals of EXPORTS. NASA is planning on conducting a synthesis and modeling phase to EXPORTS if the observational phase successfully concludes.
The EXPORTS experimental plan requires two ships. A Process Ship that follows a subsurface instrumented float and makes rates determinations and a Survey Ship that samples spatial gradients around the Process Ship and tends to the AUV array.
The EXPORTS North Atlantic 2020 cruise was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We had planned to use the R/V Atlantis as the Process Ship and the RRS Discovery as the Survey Ship. NASA is committed to extending the Science Team if a 2021 Spring Bloom cruise to the North Atlantic can be conducted. It is unlikely that NASA will be able to continue support for the Science Team if the cruise does not occur in the Spring of 2021. Initial discussions with NOC indicates they we should be able to charter the RRS Discovery for one of these ships. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
We are requesting here a global class ship to serve as the EXPORTS Process Ship. If a global class ship is not available, we can discuss/negotiate alternative plans.
Field work will be focused on in situ work for ~30 days on station (somewhat negotiable) preferably in the May-June 2020 timeframe. Nominal site is the PAP Observatory (49N 16.5W). |
Summary of other requirements and comments: |
Requirements for the Process Ship will be identical what was planned for the R/V Atlantis on the postponed 2020 cruise and to the 2018 EXPORTS field campaign to Station P aboard the R/Vs Revelle. |

Want to see the peak and demise of the spring bloom. Too early means reduced signal while too late increased risk of missing the signal completely. |

Other Ship(s): |
A Global Class vessel and an Ocean Class vessel are needed similar to EXPORTS North Pacific.
Working with UK NOC for use of RRS Discovery as one of the two ships in 2021.
The Global class ship will follow an instrumented float closely while the Ocean class ship will make spatial surveys about the Global Ship.
The process ship cruise plan is made up of 3 eight day sampling epochs with coordinated activities planned.
The survey ship will make CTD / UW sampling survey around the process ship - sampling upto a couple 100 km from the process ship.
We are planning for 4 weather days resulting in a total of 28 days on station.
There will a suite of autonomous vehicles in the water too. |

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: |
. |
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
Need both ships to mobilize at the same port at the same time as members of several research groups will be on both ships.
Can demobilize from different ports - but that is not optimal. |

Short Description of Op Area
for use in schedules: |
North Atlantic |
Description of Op Area: |
Northwest Atlantic to the peak of the spring bloom and its decline. Considerable effort assessing satellite model / historical data has gone into the location and timing to meet overall project goals.
Will need ability to alter exact starting sampling site based upon available real time data. Might alter site up to 500 km from 50N 30W. |

Are you or any member in your science party bringing in any science equipment items which are regulated for export by the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR)?
|
No |
If yes, have you applied for the necessary permits through your export control office?
|
No |

Comments about foreign clearance requirements or description of any other special permitting requirements (e.g., MMPA, ESA, IHA, Marine Sanctuaries, etc.) |
May need clearance to work in Canadian waters. |

Explanation/justification for requested ports and dates of intermediate stops or to list additional port stops |
Both ships should mobilize within the same security perimeter.
Very willing to choose other ports if it reduces overall ship days.
Can demobilize from different ports - although not optimal. |

14C/32Si phytoplankton productivity, 3H bacterial rates all in a rad van (maybe 2) on the Global ship. Likely each ship will need a GP lab van. WHOI group will bring its own van for Thorium234 sampling on the survey ship
