Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Summary of Field Work: Need to run approximately 1400 miles of line transects in Beaufort sea states of 4 or less. The transects line run in a zig-zag pattern across Northeast and Northwest Providence Channels and Tongue of the Ocean. We will co-ordinate with Naval Undersea Warfare Center to survey waters of the Atlantic Underwater Testing and Evaluation Center's range in Tongue of the Ocean. This may include docking at the AUTEC base. During >B5 conditions will remain in port, unless there is need to transit. When beaked whales are sighted, we will want to launch the RHIB for close approaches to the group. We will be towing the hydrophone array during all surveys and transits.

Original Shiptime request lists the Walton Smith and the Urraca, but it appears that this is a request for either vessel, but not both.
Updated Request (8/1/07) now lists 47 total science days.

requirements that could affect choice
of ship in scheduling.

We will be bringing our own 18' RHIB and will need to lift and stow this on deck. The RHIB will be launched during beaked whale encounters and used for close approaches. We may need a 55 gal drum store don deck for auxiliary gasoline for the RHIB. We will tow a 400m hydrophone array. We will need to mount 2 pairs of BigEye binoculars on the pilot house roof, if possible or one wings. These weigh 135 lbs. each.
