Description of Repeating cruise requirements: |
This request is for the second of the two cruises. On this cruise, Worcester will recover six acoustic source moorings and one Distributed Vertical LIne Array (DVLA) receiver mooring deployed approximately one year earlier. In addition, Worcester will deploy a new deep DVLA receiver mooring to record J15-3 signals transmitted on the subsequent cruise for which Stephen (WHOI) is Chief Scientist. Finally, Howe will recover five Seagliders deployed in November 2010. |
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
The acoustic sources deployed in spring 2010 are programmed to stop transmitting on 15 April 2011 in preparation for recovery, which makes the optimum cruise start date 15 April 2011. In addition, weather considerations make April-May the best time frame for this work, as it is after the worst winter weather and prior to the typhoon season. Either the Revelle or the Melville would be adequate for the mooring deployments and recoveries, although the Revelle is preferred because of its larger deck space. |
