Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Project Title: Kelp forest interaction webs in the Aleutian archipelago: patterns and mechanisms of change following the collapse of an apex predator Project Status: Submitted

Summary of Field Work: We will conduct subtidal surveys of kelp forests and surveys of sea otters using small skiffs. Subtidal work will be done with AAUS scuba divers. We also will be conducting bottom trawls for sea urchins and doing CTD casts at select locations.
Summary of Facility Requirements: We would like to use as many small skiff as the chartered vessel has available (including outboards and gas). We will bring extra skiffs if needed. We would like 3-4 skiffs. We also either need (or will bring) a scuba air compressor, CTD, and small bottom trawl. We will need a crane or wench for the trawl and CTD. We would ike access to some freezer space. We will need space to clean and dry scuba gear (an indoor area is preferred for this), fill tanks, and process samples. Tank filling and sample processing can occur either inside or out.

Repeating Cruise?
(within same year)
Yes Interval: 1 per year # of Cruises: 3

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: Requirements are the same for each year. Locations vary slightly. Timing can vary slightly.
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
We need 18 days to visit approximately 3 island groups (in the Aluetians) per year. Each island group has between 2-6 islands.

Aleutians
Description of Op Area: Our study area is the Aleutians (between Attu and Unalaska). In 2008, we would like to start the cruise on Adak.
