Summary of Field Work: |
Two cruises will be conducted aboard UNOLS vessels in Guaymas Basin and off Santa Rosalia, in the Gulf of California, Mexico. Cruises will take place in June of 2010 and June 2011. A total of 14 science days plus 10 days transit are requested for each cruise. We will tow trawl midwater trawl nets, SCUBA dive, tow an acoustic array, jig for squids, and conduct physiological studies on board ship. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
Winch with 0.68" conducting cable for use with 3 m square Tucker trawl with MOCNESS-like opening-closing mechanism.

Summary of other requirements and comments: |
We have one grant (proposal #0851043 or STR 0850839, Gilly is PI) that concerns Dosidicus gigas (jumbo squid) in the Gulf of California Guaymas basin. This proposal has been "recommended" by NSF but not officially awarded yet. I will be chief scientist.
The original shiptime request form says that one cruise will take place 3/15/2010 and the other 11/15/2011. Please disregard that.
What we would like is for both cruises to take place in June (2010 and 2011). We would like to load the ship as before in San Diego and transit around the peninsula into the Gulf to start work by June 7. We requested 24 days total, 14 science days for each cruise plus 10 transit days.
We have a second grant (proposal #0852160, Midwater animal models: Optical measurement of metabolic transitions in pelagic biota, Sönke Johnsen is my co-PI) that is officially awarded.
We requested working off Southern California in June of 2010. Obviously the ship and I can't be in two places at once, but we might be able to put both cruises back to back. We're still figuring out what will work best for us, but maybe your schedule will dictate that.
We have a third grant from Office of Naval Research. My part of it (with co-PI Gilly from grant #1) did not request shiptime, but Sönke Johnsen (co-PI on grant #2 above) did request shiptime in the Gulf of California for his part of this ONR grant. It may be possible to piggy-back this somehow usefully as well. Still working this one out also. |

Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
The New Horizon is the nearest ship to our destination. We've used it extensively in the Gulf of California for this type of work. We prefer to load the ship in San Diego and transit to Guaymas (5 days). We require 14 science days and 5 additional transit days to offload the ship in San Diego. |

Explanation/justification for requested ports and dates of intermediate stops or to list additional port stops |
We prefer to transit to Guaymas Basin from San Diego to avoid shipping equipment in to Mexico. Not all cruise participants will be able to spend five days transiting there and back so we request intermediate port stops to pick up and drop off cruise participants flying in and out of Mexico. |

Explain Instrumentation or Capability requirements that could affect choice of ship in scheduling. |
We will conduct trawling using a large Tucker Trawl. It can be signaled to close using an electronic mechanism (MOCNESS). In that case it requires a 0.68 conducting coax cable. If not available, the trawl can be operated manually using a double-trip mechanism with messengers.
