Summary of Field Work: |
Surveys and process studies in the Chesapeake Bay, conducted on 3 cruises over two years, each cruise 7 days long.
Surveys will be conducted using a GMI Scanfish and CTD (for calibrating Scanfish data) at the beginning, middle, and end of the cruise. During process studies we will be anchored or remain at one station and conduct CTD casts with Niskin bottles for plankton collection, and plankton and fish net tows using a MOCNESS net, mid-water trawl, and modified Be-nets. Plankton collections will be conducted over diel cycles, and some collections will be sorted on board and used for on-board incubation experiments to measure vital rates of plankton.
The only hazardous materials that will be required for this work are preservation of plankton samples: formaldehyde, ethanol, gluteraldehyde, and neutral red. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
Scanfish and required cranes and winches; CTD with 10L Niskin Bottles; winches and cranes for MOCNESS, mid-water trawl, and Be-net deployments - MOCNESS requires conducting cable, mid-water trawl and Be net do not, but require wire that can accommodate a messenger and messenger release system; running seawater for net washdown and incubation set up. |
