Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

  DYNAMO Fluxes  -  2011  -  Roger Revelle
  Project Information
Project Title: Surface / Subsurface Fluxes Beneath Large-Scale Convective Centers in the Indian Ocean - Shipboard Component of DYNAMO Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: Jim N. Moum, OSU_COAS Project Institution: OSU_Oregon State
Project ID: 102294 Version #: 3
Date Submitted: 1/12/2010 5:54:00 PM Created By: Jim N. Moum
Date Last Modified: 1/24/2012 4:08:00 PM URI Serial #: None
Funding Agencies: NSF/OCE/PO - 1029265 - Funded
NAVY/ONR - NONE - Funded
Summary of Field Work: ocean profiling on station in the central Indian Ocean

atmospheric measurements:
C-band radar,W-band radar, lidar, meteorology, flux mast
Summary of Facility Requirements: A Global Class vessel is required t o house the combined radar/lidar array.
Summary of other requirements and comments: DYNAMO is the US component of a larger international experiment. This will require a certain amount of coordination in terms of experiment timing (fall 2011). This is detailed in the DYNAMO experiment plan. The DYNAMO experiment plan and science overviews will be submitted January 2010.

Requested Ship, Operating Days and Dates
Year: 2011 Ship/Facility: Roger Revelle
Optimum Start Date: 11/15/2011 Dates to Avoid: not sure yet - will require international coordination

Earliest Start Date:   Multi-Ship Op: Yes
Latest Start Date:   Other Ship(s): This request is to be coordinated with international field programs from Japan, Australia, India and France. There will be further requests for Revelle through DYNAMO (related to this program) which will be proposed to NSF in Feb 2010.

Repeating Cruise?
(within same year)
Yes Interval: 4 # of Cruises: 2

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: The DYNAMO plan includes 4 legs
mooring deployment / 15d (Lien)
Station Leg 1 / 40d (Moum / Fairall)
Station Leg 2 / 35d (Moum / Fairall)
mooring recovery / 19d (Lien)
These cruises will be sequential on a single vessel. The middle 2 Station Legs will be identical operations to the same location (0, 80E).
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
We are requesting joint funding for mutliple legs from ONR (Moum), NSF (Lien, Moum), NOAA (Fairall) .

Revelle in particular is requested because of its superior Doppler sonar.
