Summary of Field Work: |
We are proposing to study the volume, salt, heat and oxygen fluxes through the deep Samoan Passage using a lowered ADCP, profiling moorings and microstructure profilers provided by collaborator Carter. We are specifically interested in the role of internal waves and mixing in modifying these fluxes. Three cruises are planned: a short (4-day) mapping cruise in March 2011 to collect necessary bathymetry data, then two longer (40-day) survey cruises in March 2012 and Sept. 2013. A total of 9 moorings will be deployed during the first cruise, 4 of which will be deployed at the end of the cruise and will remain deployed until the second cruise. Five moorings are planned to be deployed during the second cruise. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
Global class research vessel capable of deploying full-depth (5000 m) moorings with deck space for gear associated with up to 5 moorings (anchors, floats, wire, etc.) and capable of being underway for 40 days w/out resupply. Deck space on an intermediate class ship is not sufficient to accomodate mooring gear. Also, global class ship must have TSE mooring winch or equivalent. Port facility with appropriate equip. for handling heavy mooring gear (forklifts) and capable of loading/storing a 40ft. intermodal container. |

Explain Instrumentation or Capability requirements that could affect choice of ship in scheduling. |
Mooring deployment requires a global class ship with sufficient A-frame clearance and deck space to accomodate gear associated with 5 or more full-depth moorings (floats, glass, anchors, wire, spooler, etc.). CTD with full ocean depth capacity (6000 m) necessary for CTD/ Lowered ADCP work. CTD with serial uplink capability is requested.
