Summary of Field Work: |
(1) Process cruises: Revelle-class vessel, in 2011, 2012, and 2014: Conduct Lagrangian, water-parcel tracking cruises to measure nutrient fluxes and plankton growth, grazing, predation, and sinking terms in different mesoscale features in the California Current System. Interdisciplinary team of biological, chemical, and physical oceanographers. Each of these 3 cruises needs to be in the early summer/late spring period of strongest mesoscale gradients in the region. Each will be of 30 days duration.
(2) Augmented CalCOFI: New Horizon-class vessel, in each of 6 years (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016): 2 supplemental days added to 4 CalCOFI cruises per year for additional sampling of microbial, other plankton, and fish populations. Work to be scheduled and coordinated with CalCOFI cruises.
(3) Mooring servicing: New Horizon-class vessel, in each of 6 years (2011-2016): 4 days per year for servicing CCE interdisciplinary biogeochemical moorings. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
(1) Process cruises (Revelle class vessel): Seasoar, Pinkel Doppler sonar, double 1 m2 MOCNESS with 202-µm nets and full sensors, fully configured CTD rosette, isotope vans, trace metal clean van. Other special equipment to be determined. High speed internet and berthing for minimum of 34 scientists required for each Revelle cruise. Science party will supply satellite-tracked drift arrays and autonomous sampling devices.
(2) Augmented CalCOFI (New Horizon class vessel): regular over-the-side sampling and laboratory processing equipment and vans. Oozeki fish trawl (or equivalent) will be provided by science party.
(3) Mooring servicing (New Horizon class vessel): standard A-frame, winches, navigation, echosounder, CTD rosette. |
Summary of other requirements and comments: |
For process cruises on R/V Revelle, reliable High Seas Net internet service will be required on all ship headings to ensure uninterrupted tracking of over-the-side drift arrays and autonomous vehicles. |

Explain Instrumentation or Capability requirements that could affect choice of ship in scheduling. |
The R/V New Horizon is the minimum vessel suitable for these mooring operations because of the sea conditions in the Pt. Conception region.
