Summary of Field Work: |
Our objective is to measure the flow structure and turbulence in the bottom boundary layer (BBL) of the coastal ocean and study their dependence on circulation, wave field and bottom topography. High resolution measurements in two independent sample areas will be perform using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), but instrumentation includes also a sonar to map the bottom topography, an ADV, and other ancillary sensors. We will also use the research vessel’s ADCP, CTD and bottom sonar. To obtain the required range of Reynolds numbers, ratios of mean current to wave amplitude, orientation of waves relative to mean current, and orientation of both relative to bottom ripples, data will be acquired at several sites along the Atlantic Continental Shelf, from the NY Bight to the LEO-15 region. The NY Bight area offers sites with relatively high currents, while in the vicinity of LEO-15, wave-induced velocity and currents often have similar magnitude. |
