Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Summary of Field Work: Our objective is to measure the flow structure and turbulence in the bottom boundary layer (BBL) of the coastal ocean and study their dependence on circulation, wave field and bottom topography. High resolution measurements in two independent sample areas will be perform using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), but instrumentation includes also a sonar to map the bottom topography, an ADV, and other ancillary sensors. We will also use the research vessel’s ADCP, CTD and bottom sonar. To obtain the required range of Reynolds numbers, ratios of mean current to wave amplitude, orientation of waves relative to mean current, and orientation of both relative to bottom ripples, data will be acquired at several sites along the Atlantic Continental Shelf, from the NY Bight to the LEO-15 region. The NY Bight area offers sites with relatively high currents, while in the vicinity of LEO-15, wave-induced velocity and currents often have similar magnitude.
Summary of Facility Requirements: The proposal vessel and timing are the RV Hugh Sharp in Spring/Summer of 2011 and 2012,  for two weeks each time.
