Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Project ID: 102536 Version #: 2
Date Submitted: 6/8/2010 5:00:00 PM Created By: Rich Patterson
Date Last Modified: 8/4/2010 5:14:00 PM URI Serial #: None
Funding Agencies: OTHER - NONE - Funded
Summary of Field Work: Testing of the accoustic systems installed on a HUGIN autonomous underwater vehicle, including the HISAS 1030 synthetic aperture sonar and EM 3002 multibeam echo sounder. Field work to take place off the coast of San Diego, CA.
Testing will involve the collection of SAS imagery and SAS/Multibeam bathymetric data. In addition, some detection and possible classification of objects on the sea floor may be performed.
Summary of Facility Requirements: - Vessel with open space on the back deck to accommodate (1) 20 foot ISO container, (1) 10 foot ISO container and (1) winch system for deployment of acoustic communication system.
- Equipment requires both 220VAC and 440VAC power.
- Facility for deploying 80 kg USBL transducer over the side of the vessel.
- Crane for deploying acoustic communication sonar.
- Dock-side crane capable of lifting approximately 6 metric tons.
- Source of fresh water for vehicle wash down.

Explanation of Science Party Requirements and Technician Requirements Testing will take place only during the daytime hours, so the ship will be returning to port each day. Therefore, birthing is not required, and we would like to carry more than the normal science party complement for the Sproul. Should only require one operator provided technician for assistance in facilitizing equipment and for evolutions requiring the use of the ship's crane or over the side deployment equipment.
