Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Project Title: Science Verification Cruise for the Alvin HOV following upgrade. Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: Peter R. Girguis, Harvard Project Institution: Harvard
Project ID: 102571 Version #: 6
Date Submitted: 7/28/2010 2:28:00 PM Created By: Christopher German
Date Last Modified: 1/25/2013 7:07:00 PM URI Serial #: None
Funding Agencies: NSF/OCE/IPS - NONE - Funded
Summary of Field Work: This cruise will aim to engage a range of interested scientists from across the US HOV-user community to conduct a series of scientific investigations that will make increasingly complex demands of the upgraded Alvin HOV in Spring 2013, in pursuit of real-world scientific objectives, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new vehicle and its readiness to resume National Deep Submergence Facility operations.
Summary of Facility Requirements: We will need the use of the RV Atlantis and the new upgraded version of the Alvin HOV - the cruise needs to follow the engineering seatrials of the vehicle (currently planned for early 2013) but should precede any scheduling of funded NDSF use of the vehicle to allow THIS cruise to be undertaken to ensure that the new science payloads etc are functioning correctly and as intended, ready for science usage.

Description of Repeating cruise requirements:
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
The ship required will be the Atlantis as the support ship for the HOV Alvin. This cruise needs, ideally, to immediately follow the engineering trials cruise that will be led by Pat Hickey (Operations Manager for the Alvin HOV) and should precede any further cruises that are to be scheduled to make use of the Alvin HOV once it re-enters National Deep Submergence Facility service.

Foreign Clearance and Permitting Requirements
Foreign Clearance Required? Yes Coastal States:
Important Info on Foreign Research Clearances

Are you or any member in your science party bringing in any science equipment items which are regulated for export by the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR)?
No If yes, have you applied for the necessary permits through your export control office? No
 Questions about ITAR/EAR regulations?

Starting Port: Bermuda or Florida - We know that the preceding (engineering dives) trials cruise will start and end in Bermuda, hence that is the most efficient start point for this cruise. End Port - Florida?

Explanation of Science Party Requirements and Technician Requirements We expect demand to participate in this cruise to be high.
4 Agencies reps, 4 DESSC evaluators and up to 16 science users - hence the full complement of science berths including shared staterooms with both SSSGs is proposed.
