Summary of Field Work: |
Deployment and recovery operations of one sediment trap mooring (with multiple traps on the mooring), water pumping, and box/multi-coring at mooring site on the Bermuda Rise. The mooring will consist of 5 sediment trap clusters located at 300, 1000, 1500, 2000, and 4400 m water depth. Pumping will occur at the trap depths and some closer to the surface, and coring will occur on-site as well. We are planning a total of six cruises over 18 months (one every three months). |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
We need a ship with enough deck space for deployment and recovery of a 5-trap mooring, a winch capable of spooling approximately 4200 m of 1/4" jacketed wire rope, a block capable of passing the wire rope with pear links and shackles, and a capstan for assistance in removing/adding traps during recovery/deployment operations. We also need a separate winch with sufficient wire to core in water depths of 4500 m, and to accommodate clip-on water pumps. |

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: |
The project consists of six cruises over 18 months (one every three months). Cruises ideally need to be scheduled closely after the sediment traps have run their three-month programs. |
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
Co-PIs on this proposal (Cindy Lee, J. Kirk Cochran, and Rob Armstrong) have deployed these particular traps with the Endeavor before, and felt this ship is ideal for our purposes. A larger ship (such as the Knorr) is overkill for our operations, while a smaller ship (such as the Cape Hatteras) is probably not large enough for our needs.
5 days of time on site should be sufficient for trap recovery and deployment, water pumping, and coring. |

Narragansett is the Endeavor's home port, and is conveniently close to the PI's institution (Stony Brook University, NY) for loading and travel purposes. It is also one of the closest ports to the mooring site, thus reducing transit time. Alternatively, Bermuda could be used as a port. |

The science party consists of 4 faculty members, 3 or 4 graduate students, 1 undergraduate student, and 1 technician. Black is responsible for sediment trap deployment/recovery and coring operations. Cochran is responsible for water pumping operations. Lee and Armstrong are responsible for analyses with support from Black and Cochran. The students will assist the PIs. |
