Summary of Field Work: |
We propose a two 1 day cruises on the RV Sproul to introduce students to different aspects of oceanographic research and to provide samples for laboratory study during shore-based part of the course. For the (primarily) Biology of Fishes day there will be a series of 4 otter trawls at different depths east of the Coronado banks. For the (primarily) Marine Invertebrates day there will be an oblique plankton haul, (2) an otter trawl near the Coronado banks, (3) a midwater (IKMT) trawl west of the Coronado banks. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
Plankton net with 333 mesh net, mid water trawl (IKMT); otter trawl. |

Classes end March 11 so the 12/13 weekend is the latest we can go out. Students have class all week so we really can only go on the weekends = Feb12,13; 19,20; 26,27; March 5,6; 12,13 |

Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
We propose a two 1 day cruise on the R/V Gordon Sproul to introduce students to different aspects of oceanographic research and to provide samples for laboratory study during shore-based part of the course. The first day cruise (proposed for Saturday Feb 26), will mainly have the Biology of Fishes course SIO 294 students (some Marine Invertebrates students will go to maximize the science party): Station 1: 32 °42’51” N, 117 °24’ W Otter trawl at 400 meters depth Station 2: 32 °41’ N, 117 ° 23’ W Otter trawl at 250 meters depth Station 1: 32 °38’53” N, 117 °20’17” W Otter trawl at 100 meters depth. If time permits a 4th trawl will be done.
Day 2 Feb 27 will focus on Marine Invertebrates students (though Biology of Fishes can go as well) (1) oblique plankton net haul, (2) an otter trawl near the Coronado banks, (3) a midwater trawl (IKMT). Station 1: 32 40 N, 117 20W (water depth ~120 m) Oblique plankton net haul while steaming toward Station 2. Ideally we would use a plankton net with 100 or 333 mesh (we will supply) Station 2: 32 40 N, 117 23W to 32 40 N, 117 24W Otter trawl (we will provide net; P. Zerowfski ) while steaming toward Station 3 Station 3: 32 40 N, 117 32W Midwater trawl ~ 800 m. |
