Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

  Project Information
Project Title: REU Site: Bridge to Research in Marine Sciences: A Summer REU Program in Savannah, GA Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: Tara Cox, SavState Project Institution: SavState
Project ID: 103045 Version #: 2
Date Submitted: 8/23/2011 9:41:00 AM Created By: Christopher J. Hintz
Date Last Modified: 3/29/2012 10:09:00 AM URI Serial #: None
Funding Agencies: NSF/OCE/IPS - 7172157 - Funded
Summary of Field Work: Conduct Oceanographic Sampling along Georgia Bight, from estuaries out to Gulf Stream. Water Sample (water profile), sediment (grab/box coring), phyto-, zooplankton (plankton net), bottom trawl collection. ADCP, CTD, any other available instrumentation to support research experience for undergraduate (REU) program.
Summary of Facility Requirements: No extraordinary facility requirements are needed. Shallow water work up to 200-220m water depth is expected. This cruise is intended to be an introductory cruise for REU participants and thus basic water/sediment/biological sampling only is needed. Cruise will supplement UNOLS cruises funded by other NSF grants funded at SSU, and will include some ship of opportunity sampling for SSU graduate and undergraduate students.

Description of Repeating cruise requirements:
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
R/V Savannah is local to Savannah, GA. She is fully capable platform for the REU students to learn to conduct oceanographic research. Her crew is ideal for introducing students who have not been to sea before. Great crew to work with.
