Summary of Field Work: Hotspots of biological activity have been documented in the vicinity of Hanna Shoal in the northern Chukchi Sea, particularly along its southeastern and eastern margins. Because of the biological significance of this region and its importance for oil and gas exploration and development, we have been funded by BOEMRE to examine the biological, chemical and physical properties that define this ecosystem. Our study extends work recently completed under the 2009-2011 COMIDA-CAB program in which over 70 stations were occupied in the northern Chukchi with a focus on trophic structure, sediments, inventories of anthropogenic chemicals (trace metals and organics), and inventories of benthic and epibenthic fauna. The new efforts on the Hanna Shoal region will continue these CAB studies, along with additional studies of pelagic component to address standing stocks of phytoplankton and zooplankton and a physical oceanographic study that will address water mass movements through direct measurement of circulation, density fields, ice conditions and modeling. We will occupy approximately 30 stations in the region during two consecutive late summer field seasons (2012 and 2013), including overlap with selected COMIDA-CAB stations, 7-9 stations along a planned international Distributed Biological Observatory (DBO) line, and continue our very productive collaboration with other science studies in the region sponsored by federal, state, or industry interests (e.g. EPA-REMAP, Shell-Conoco Philips Joint Studies Program).
Summary of Facility Requirements: The use of the icebreaker (USCGC Healy) is required for August-September multidisciplinary oceanographic sampling in the northern Chukchi Sea and down slope into the Arctic basin in variable ice conditions.
Summary of other requirements and comments: Based on prior use of the Healy during both the SBI (Shelf-Basin Interactions) and BEST (Bering Sea Ecosystem Project), it is the best vessel available to work in the variable ice environment of the northern Chukchi Sea and Arctic basin in late summer and early fall. Our project mission requirements include: CTD operations, starboard and stern winches for deployment of plankton and benthic equipment, along with a benthic camera, stern wire for deployment of multi-Haps corer and epibenthic trawl nets, mooring deployments, and use of flow-through seawater system for biological experiments on deck.

We would like to work in low ice extent for the multiple science operations, yet minimize potential weather impacts. This is especially critical for the mooring operation. Since this is an icebreaker we can work in late July for the process cruise. We do not want to work in late Sept-Oct due to both local hunting restrictions and the weather patterns that will impact multiple ship operations.

We anticipate “24/7” sampling during both field seasons, departing from Barrow, AK. In order to accommodate all scientific objectives, we plan to break the cruise into two legs, one focused on biology and chemistry (14 days) that will include sampling of one of the designated Northern Chukchi or Barrow Canyon DBO transect lines and a second leg (intermediate port Barrow) focused on circulation and mooring deployment (6 days), plus transit time from ports to the core study area.

Explanation of Science Party Requirements and Technician Requirements The COMIDA HS team is composed of 5 teams for Leg 1: physical oceanography, water column/isotopes, zooplankton nets, benthic grabs, and epibenthic trawling. We also anticipate seabird and marine mammal observers. The subsequent Leg 2 will be composed of the mooring team and water column sampling.

We will undertake benthic sediment coring and epibenthic trawling that both use the large diameter trawl wire off the stern. Both the van Veen grabs, multi-Haps corer, and epibenthic trawls have been deployed successfully from the Healy.
