Summary of Field Work: |
Surveys of Alexandrium fundyense cyst abundance in the sediments are one on-going element of a multi-investigator, multi-disciplinary, NOAA-funded research program (ECOHAB-GOMTOX) studying the dynamics of toxic Alexandrium fundyense blooms in the Gulf of Maine (GOM) and the Bay of Fundy. One of the products of that research has been the formulation of biological-physical models that specifically require the cyst abundance in the sediments to be observed each Fall for computation of seasonal and synoptic forecasts of bloom severity in the overlying waters during the following spring. With this new ECOHAB project, that modeling capability is now being transitioned from research to operational mode within NOAA.
To supply the critical cyst data in Fall, 2012 for the spring 2013 computer forecasts, a total of 125 stations from Mass Bay to the Bay of Fundy will be sampled over an 11-12 day cruise. A Craib Corer will be used to collect undisturbed surface sediments. All samples will be processed onboard and brought back to the lab for later microscopic enumeration of cysts. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
Several successful cyst surveys were completed in past years using either the R/V Oceanus or R/V Endeavor. R/V Endeavor is the only UNOLS vessels in the region available in Fall, 2012. Endeavor is the perfect platform for the cyst surveys with light coring operations to be done off the starboard CTD work area and heavier coring ops using USGS equipment to be done on the aft deck using either the crane or the A-Frame. No UNOLS supplied equipment will be needed other than normal CTD/rosette and routine underway hydrographic data collection. |

Optimum Start Date:

Dates to Avoid: |
This cruise cannot be scheduled earlier than noted because the cysts that we sample need time to settle to the bottom in late summer and early Fall. Later in the Fall (late November/December is not preferable given the weather and the sensitivity of our coring ops to seas greater than 6-8ft. |
