Summary of Field Work: |
Will be conducting repeated high-resolution sonar surveys at shelf site 18 nm from Cape Henlopen DE to document bedform dynamics and scour processes in the vicinity of diverse seabed objects. Will be deploying a bottom mooring with ADCP and rotary sonar for several months at a time. Ship will also be used as the platform for AUV launch and recovery to perform AUV surveys of the seabed. Repeated cruises will be used to recover and redeploy the bottom mooring and to perform repeated sonar surveys. Sediment samples (Van Veen grabs) and CTD profiles will also be collected during the cruises. |

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: |
Bottom mooring requires servicing and turn around approximately 60-80 days from initial deployment (based on battery life and memory storage). This internal also provides a time window for periodic energetic events (storms) to pass through and change the seabed which will then be resurveyed to look for changes to the seabed. Moorings need to be recovered before the long winter break. |
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
Approximately one day is needed for the mooring work and the other two for mapping surveys- these tasks can be separated from each other if schedule opportunities favor splitting up these activities. RV Sharp requested because of proximity to and familiarity with the field site from previous PI cruises to the area and because of the multibeam system, CTD handling system, and familiarity by the PI with AUV operations from this vessel from numerous previous cruises. |
