Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Project Title: ALOHA Cabled Observatory: Operations and Maintenance Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: Bruce M. Howe, UH_SOEST Project Institution: UH_SOEST
Project ID: 103240 Version #: 6
Date Submitted: 2/6/2012 3:52:00 PM Created By: Bruce M. Howe
Date Last Modified: 9/25/2012 3:44:00 PM URI Serial #: None
Funding Agencies: NSF/OCE/OTIC - 1239637 - Funded
Summary of Field Work: Project will conduct operations and maintenance (O&M) activities on the ALOHA Cabled Observatory (ACO).

Year 1 - 2013: Testing of installed components will be done to try and localize existing faults. The AMM secondary node will be recovered; some subset will be re-deployed. The camera will be replaced. The TAAM mooring will be recovered (if not on a previous cruise). Depending on status, the acoustic modem may be redeployed on a small frame.

The cruise may be extended if other funded projects are ready to deploy.

This cruise/activity will repeat on an annual basis, with details changing.

Year 2 - 2014: Deploy TAAM mooring; other O&M

Year3: - 2015: O&M
Summary of Facility Requirements: Class-A ship (Kilo-Moana, Thompson or larger), JASON-2 or equivalent (work at 4720 m). Deck space for JASON vans and deck equipment. Need mooring winch for recovery (mooring 200 m long, anchor first). Room for science party of at least 22.
Summary of other requirements and comments: We expect the UH ROV to be on-line by the time these cruises take place. If Jason
is busy or for other reasons, it may be used (in consultation with NSF).
