Summary of Field Work: |
We will investigate spatial and depth-related gradients in the abilities of heterotrophic microbial communities to initiate carbon cycling via activities of their extracellular enzymes. We will carry out incubation experiments with water collected during the cruise.
Both transect cruises are intended to resolve spatial and depth-related differences in carbon cycling processes, for which we will be collecting water with Niskin/CTD casts and processing samples for measurement of microbial community composition, activities and particulate and dissolved organic matter composition in depth profiles through the water column. The transects will ideally be conducted during late spring (May-June) to coincide with times of higher primary productivity. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
We need Niskin rosette and CTD, a radioisotope van, a -80 freezer, and two refrigerators. If a cold van can fit also aboard ship, it would be very helpful. |

Explanation of Science Party Requirements and Technician Requirements |
We will have specific teams dealing with each type of analysis/sample/experiment that we will be conducting. Separate groups will be in the rad van, cold van, and labs. A marine tech is needed to help us with CTD/Niskin work. |

Explain Instrumentation or Capability requirements that could affect choice of ship in scheduling. |
We will be measuring bacterial productivity (leucine incorporation).
|
|
|
Explain Major Ancillary Facilities Requirements and list description and provider for "other" systems. |
The cold lab is required for processing and incubating samples obtained from sub-thermocline waters. The rad van is required for incubation of samples to measure bacterial protein production. |
