Summary of Field Work: |
The main objective of the field work is to collect samples by dredging from the basaltic crust of the subducting Pacific seafloor along the Izu-Bonin Trench. ~Half of the target area had already been previously mapped, but the remaining ~half has to be surveyed and mapped first. A total of 29 dredge locations, in front of fault scarps, is planned. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
Multibeam sonar for mapping, magnetometer, dredging equipments (dredge baskets, sample bags, wooden/steel boxes, dredging wire(s)), onboard plotter for map making |
Summary of other requirements and comments: |
At least one resident technician and a computer technician to keep the multibeam system producing real time maps of the seafloor. |
