Summary of Field Work: |
Hydrographic survey (shipboard CTD and Underway CTD) of Bay of Bengal international waters, recovery/deployment of gliders, deployment of Argo drifters and floats, short-term deployments of other drifting instrument platforms (SIO Wirewalkers, ASIS buoy); surface mooring deployments anticipated later in the field program (~2015). On some cruises, visual surveys of marine mammal populations will be conducted concurrently with other activities. |

Explanation/justification for requested ports and dates of intermediate stops or to list additional port stops |
All gear for this leg will have been loaded during the mobilization period of the preceding leg. We would like the preceding leg to end in Trincomalee, where we would do a personnel change to staff this leg. The motivation for doing the personnel change in Trincomalee is that it would minimize transit time to/from the study region. The motivation for ending in Colombo is that it is a larger port, with better access for outbound container shipments (and we assume better logistics for the ship). |

Explanation of Science Party Requirements and Technician Requirements |
This program (ASIRI) is a multi-investigator ONR project, with PIs from WHOI, Scripps, UW-APL, Oregon State, and other institutions. The present request is part of the pilot phase of the project, with dual purposes of surveying the region to establish a baseline for the program and testing observational approaches. |
