Summary of Field Work: |
Project will conduct measurements of O2 and Ar from shipboard measurements and from underwater mass spectrometer attached to a tow sled. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
Project will require ship access with underway seawater system and capability to extend and retract a ~100 kg tow sled in the euphotic zone (top 200 m of the ocean). |
Summary of other requirements and comments: |
Drum with conducting wire coaxial cable as typically found with ctd rosette systems. |

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: |
|
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
We have based this STR on the idea of a collaborative use with a hypothetical hydrographic survey with spaced CTD stations. We propose to deploy and tow the Seasoar in between CTD stations. The Seasoar technicians indicate a max towing speed of 8 knots. This will increase transit time between stations by 20%, if normal cruising speed is 10 knots. Assuming 16 hours steaming per day, this adds an additional 2 days onto a 14 day cruise. We have included an additional two days to reflect deployment and recovery time. The endeavor has been used before to tow the Seasoar. It is based at the home port of the lead PI, Brice Loose. Most equipment, aside from the Seasoar will be mobilized from the URI Bay Campus, and this is the basis of the choice of ship and location. If it proves prohibitive to ship the Seasoar from Scripps, the cruise could be based from San DIego. |
