Summary of Field Work: |
The Wendy Schmidt Ocean Health XPRIZE is a competition to inspire innovation of accurate, robust, and affordable pH sensors that will profoundly improve our understanding of ocean acidification. The final phase of the competition (Phase 4) will put eligible sensors to the test in the deep open ocean environment at the HOT station off Hawaii. Sensors will be deployed to at least 3000m depths on a roseatte. The Validation Team will also be collecting in situ water samples for comparison to the sensor readings. Mutliple tests will be conducted over 5 days to provide sufficient data to assess the most accurate and precise pH sensors that can perform in deep ocean environments. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
A Research Vessel that can accommodate at least 25 science party members. A roseatte sampling package with at least 24 Niskin bottles and a CTD. A laboratory in which the water samples can be analyzed. Space on deck for Validation Team van. |
Summary of other requirements and comments: |
This will be a high-profile cruise. There will be associated media press releases and international PR. We will also have a camera crew for filming for a documentary and for other PR purposes. |

Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
Phase 3 of the competition ends in mid-March 2015 and teams need time to turn around. The final awards are scheduled for July 15, and the Judges need time to analyze the data and determine a winner. Therefore we would ideally request dates in May 2015.
We chose the Thomas G. Thompson because it has a sufficient number of berths and the capabilities to conduct the work. |

Explanation of Science Party Requirements and Technician Requirements |
The science party consists of XPRIZE personnel (5), the Validation Team (5), Judges (5), Teams (10) and possible VIPs (5; they may just visit for a day). A technician will be required to operate the roseatte package and CTD. Our Validation Team are experienced sea-going scientific oceanographers (including from the University of Washington and PMEL). |
