Summary of Field Work: |
This cruise is dedicated to collecting multibeam sonar and other related data (sidescan, sub-bottom profiling, sediments, video footage, water column) to map and examine a mid-shelf portion of the continental margin off Savannah, GA. We are working closely with the SC Dept. of Natural Resources' MARMAP program to identify and characterize potential sites for Marine Protected Area (MPA) designation. Cruise participants will include 13 undergraduate students who are enrolled in the College of Charleston (CofC) BEAMS Program. The program is in its 9th year of training cadres of geoscientists in the area of marine survey, using the CARIS HIPS & SIPS software. Students learn the post-processing software, collect data at sea, and conduct research using the collected data. In the past we've had annual ship-time awarded to the program aboard the NOAA Ship FOSTER. That ship-time is no longer available due to government budget constraints. The CofC supported a BEAM 2014 cruise aboard the r/V Savannah last year and has agreed to support the coast again for 2015. Kongsberg has again offered to loan an EM2040 multibeam sonar system for this cruise. The R/V Savannah proved to be an ideal vessel for data collection and training of BEAMS Program students. Two 3-day cruises will be conducted, allowing as many as 26 students to participate, along with 3 faculty mentors/supervisors. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
R/V Savannah will provide winch system, sediment grab sampler, CTD and Niskin rosette, and they will work with Kongsberg to mount and install the EM2040. CofC will provide sidescan sonar towfish and subbottom profiler. UNC-Wilmington will loan the Phantom 300 ROV. |
Summary of other requirements and comments: |
2 days of mobilization (including a patch test) are anticipated, and 1 day of de-mobilization. All sonar data will be available for use by BEAMS Program students, faculty, as well as by scientists seeking information on seafloor character. Data will be uploaded to the NOAA NGDC within 1 year of collection. |

Explanation/justification for requested ports and dates of intermediate stops or to list additional port stops |
The ship's home port is Skidaway Inst. of Oceanography. We are able to bring the scientific party to Skidaway so that there is no transit time. We will begin our survey operations immediately after leaving the dock. |
