Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Project Title: Time series particle flux measurements in the Sargasso Sea Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: Maureen H. Conte, BIOS Project Institution: BIOS
Project ID: 104759 Version #: 1
Date Submitted: 2/12/2015 1:55:00 PM Created By: Maureen H. Conte

Funding Agencies: NSF/OCE/CO - 1536644 - Funded
Summary of Field Work: Since 1978, the Oceanic Flux Program (OFP) has continuously measured particle fluxes in the deep Sargasso Sea. The 37+ year time-series is the longest of its kind and has produced a unique record of temporal variability in the "biological pump", a term loosely applied here to material transfer from the surface to deep ocean resulting from upper ocean biological/physical processes. Two overarching goals drive core activities funded under the OFP grant. The first is to extend the time-series by collection of new samples that are of the highest possible quality and that have maximal oceanographic context. The second is to elucidate the causal processes that drive oceanic particle flux through comparative studies of flux magnitude and composition, and concurrent observations of external forcing (e.g. synoptic scale meteorology, climate patterns), surface water physics and biology (e.g. mesoscale features, blooms, etc.), and interior processes (e.g. particle aggregation/disaggregation, midwater scavenging).
Summary of Facility Requirements: A frame, mooring winches and blocks for mooring line, Straza tower for transducer deployment, CTD/ bottle rosette, Hydrowire 4000m casts, ADCP, laminar flow hood,
