        | Summary of Field Work: | We will test if backscatter organisms of the deep-scattering layer produce sound and describe the variability of these sounds. The field work will consist of an additional two days added to the CCE1/CCE-LTER cruises (PI Uwe Send, Mark Ohman, November 2015 and 2016) off the coast of Southern California to recover, refurbish, and redeploy a passive acoustic mooring in 4000 m depth (33 29.6 N, 122 30.9 W). We will deploy an acoustic profiling float and run an active acoustic instrument. |
        | Summary of Facility Requirements: | We request a portable Simrad EK-60 system to be mounted to the side of the research vessel, which will require mechanical supports securely attached to the hull. A-Frame for acoustic mooring deployments/recoveries; possibly RHIB for acoustic float recovery; dry lab facilities |
