Summary of Field Work: |
In 2016 we request a 27 day cruise with a suggested start and end port of San Diego. We request the ship R/V Sally Ride. The purpose of the cruise will be to study the low oxygen water column microbial community in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific. Basically we will work between 23 degrees North to 13 degrees North and between the west coast of Mexico out to 113 degrees West. We anticipate a cruise track that will cover about 4000 nautical miles. Along this track we will occupy about 50 CTD stations where we will collect water samples for chemical analysis. We will select 2 of these stations for rate measurements using stable isotope tracers, one coastal and one open ocean. We will occupy these sites for about 6 days and do extensive experimental work. Here we will do multiple CTS’a to collect water for incubation amendment experiments and deploy and recover free drifting sediment-trap/incubators. We anticipate there will be ancillary (invited) scientists that will make other measurements for a total of 20 to 25 total scientists.
In 2018 we request a 21 day cruise with a suggested start port in Honolulu and end port in San Diego. We request the ship R/V Thomas Thompson. The purpose of the cruise will be to study the low oxygen water column microbial community in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific. Basically we will do a transect from Honolulu to our study area off the west coast of Mexico to understand the Westward extent of oxygen minimum zone. Along this track we will occupy about 50 CTD stations where we will collect water samples for chemical analysis. We will select 2 of these stations for rate measurements using stable isotope tracers, one coastal and one open ocean. We will occupy these sites for about 6 days and do extensive experimental work. Here we will do multiple CTD’s to collect water for incubation amendment experiments and deploy and recover free drifting sediment-trap/incubators. This cruise will be coordinated with an undergraduate class at the University of Washington, which makes the requested time critical. We anticipate there will be ancillary (invited) scientists that will make other measurements. We anticipate ~ 20 Scientists and 10 students for a total of 30 in the science party.

Summary of Facility Requirements: |
We will need a CTD with pH meter and 4 in situ pumps (Mclane, pumps in the ship equipment list at UW). Sediment traps deployed off A-frame using ship's winch (we will bring line), need tugger winch, deck gear, pelican hooks, etc. Need cold room and wet lab with functioning chemical hood. ADCP useful, internet access desired for chasing drifting traps using Argos sat trackers. |

Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
We anticipate a science party of about 30. this will be the third of 3 cruises scheduled about 15 months apart to cover an seasonal cycle
We have requested 20 science days. In Addition to the 20 days requested from UNOLS, the University of Washington will contribute an additional 10 days and co-PI Devol has 2 days from a separate proposal for a total of 32 days. Built into this total is the transit from the San Diego to the work area. This time will be used for setting up equipment in the beginning and repacking equipment at the end. |
