Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

  Project Information
Project Title: Collaborative Research: Hydrothermal and Microbial Investigations of the Active Brothers Volcano in the Kermadec Arc Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: Susan Humphris, WHOI Project Institution: WHOI
Project ID: 104969 Version #: 1
Date Submitted: 8/7/2015 12:08:00 PM Created By: Susan Humphris
Date Last Modified: 3/9/2016 4:52:00 PM URI Serial #: None
Funding Agencies: NSF/OCE/MGG - 1558356 - Funded
Summary of Field Work: the proposal is to map, sample and document the geology and microbiology of the hydrothermal vent systems present within the caldera of Brothers volcano in the Kermadec arc. We propose 16 days of ROV time to collect rocks, mineralized samples, microbiology, push cores, as well as carry out geophysical transects for conductive heat flux, microbathymetry and magnetics. An IODP proposal to drill Brothers volcano has been forwarded for scheduling with the most likely timeframe being 2018.
Summary of Facility Requirements: The project requires a ship with ROV capability including USBL navigation and dynamic positioning. The ROV needs to operate within an active hydrothermal vent field and caldera of an underwater volcano ca. 2000m depth range. We require 18 days on station (including 2 days contingency) with two transit days from New Zealand. We are requesting ROV Jason and a UNOLS vessel capable of supporting ROV operations.
