Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Project Title: Collaborative Research: Persistent Presence in the Ocean Interior: Developing a Low-power, Autonomous System for Geo-referenced Navigation Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: James C. Kinsey, WHOI Project Institution: WHOI
Project ID: 105163 Version #: 2
Date Submitted: 2/10/2016 5:05:00 PM Created By: James C. Kinsey
Date Last Modified: 1/3/2019 7:12:00 AM URI Serial #: None
Funding Agencies: NSF/OCE/OTIC - 1634298 - Funded
Summary of Field Work: This project seeks to design, test, and deploy a one-way travel time ultra-short baseline (OWTT-USBL) navigation system capable of providing accurate positioning at depths up to 6000m while overcoming existing obstacles of immobility, cost, and/or power associated with existing underwater acoustic aiding methods such as LBL and conventional USBL. The project will: a) design and manufacture a novel acoustic array; b) field-test the array with representative attitude sensors.

Field work will have 2 parts:

1) The system will be installed on the Sentry AUV and tested at progressively deeper depths in both "on-bottom" and driving modes. Sentry's USBL system will be used to ground truth our measurements.

2) System will be installed on a glider and deployed for 1 week. LBL transponders will be deployed to provide ground truth.
Summary of Facility Requirements: For field program (1): Sentry AUV and a ship suitable for Sentry ops. Will need high quality USBL at depths up to 5000m so the "large" USBL head will be required (as opposed to the small head installed on Atlantis). Deep CTD profiles will be required for characterizing acoustics. We will need to dangle acoustic transducers over the side and have access to ship's GPS feed.

For field program (2): West coast based ship capable of supporting glider ops. Will need to deploy and survey in LBL transponders. Deep CTD profiles will be required for characterizing acoustics. We will need to dangle acoustic transducers over the side and have access to ship's GPS feed.

Foreign Clearance and Permitting Requirements
Foreign Clearance Required? Yes Coastal States:
Important Info on Foreign Research Clearances

Are you or any member in your science party bringing in any science equipment items which are regulated for export by the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR)?
No If yes, have you applied for the necessary permits through your export control office? No
 Questions about ITAR/EAR regulations?

Comments about foreign clearance requirements or
description of any other special permitting requirements
(e.g., MMPA, ESA, IHA, Marine Sanctuaries, etc.)
Our science party will have now export controlled equipment. Sentry is EAR and NDSF (not science) will need to handle that paperwork.

Explanation of Science Party Requirements and Technician Requirements Will also need to support 5 person Sentry AUV team provided by NDSF.

While Sentry is operating we will have an acoustic transducer over the side. Will also need to do CTD casts (up to 5000m depth) every 8 hours during Sentry dives. Operations will occur 24/hrs a day so ship technicians should be prepared to support this.
