Summary of Field Work: |
This is an interdisciplinary cruise to continue timeseries measurements of the water column and benthos along the Distributed Biological Observatory (DBO) lines in the Chukchi Sea. In addition to occupying DBO transects 3-5, we will carry out a process study investigating the pathways and ecosystem impacts of Pacific-origin water on carbon cycling in the Chukchi Sea. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
The activities will include conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) work, water sampling, filtering, net tows, benthic grabs, sediment coring (HAPS corer), and underway sampling. We will use the CTD system (conducting wire), trawl winch, refrigerators, freezers, underway systems, vessel-mounted ADCPs, and bathymetric systems. |

Optimum Start Date:

8/28/2017 |
Dates to Avoid: |
We need to carry out the work in late-summer because of the seasonalilty of the system. In particular, we need to be consistent with the sampling done during the previous phase of the program. In addition, we need to complete the work near Barrow Canyon by mid-September because of the autumn whale hunt. |

Description of Op Area: |
We will begin operations in the vicinity of Pt Hope in the southeast Chukchi Sea, and end operations in the vicinity of Barrow Canyon in the northeast Chukchi Sea. Our farthest point north will be on the continental slope of the Chukchi Sea, northwest of Barrow Canyon. |

Explanation of Science Party Requirements and Technician Requirements |
We will use the CTD/rosette and winch with conducting wire, the trawl winch, a significant amount of lab space, refrigerators, freezers, underway thermosalinograph, vessel-mounted ADCPs, and bathymetry systems. We will carry out science operations around the clock. Technicians are needed for managing the CTD system, running salts, carrying out the IT functions, and overseeing the operation of the multi-beam, Knudsen, and vessel-mounted ADCPs. |
