Summary of Field Work: |
Conducting shipboard observations: both atmospheric and oceanic observations in the Bay of Bengal /Northern Indian Ocean, from near the equator (0, 89E) to northern BoB (18N, 89E). Deployment of several deep sub-surface and surface air-sea moorings. Shipboard surveys include collection of ADCP currents, hydrophysical fields, turbulent and high-frequency measurements, and atmospheric boundary layer observations from ship-mounted mounted Radars and Lidars, and surface meteorological flux packages, and deploying soundings. Deploying and recovery of gliders, floats, and Wire-Walkers etc. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
Ship board ADCPs, IMET/meteorological fluxes/flow through system, CTD and water sampling, multi-beam sonar/bathymetry echo sounders, TSE winch for mooring deployments. On board mounting facilities for meteorological fluxes packages, Lidars, Radars, and Radiometers. Deck space requirements for mooring gear. Usage of crane /A-frame usage for profiling measurements. |

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: |
Conduct two back to back cruises: (1) A 21-day cruise originating from Colombo, Sri Lanka and ending in Colombo Sri Lanka, measurements within Sri Lankan EEZ (foreign clearance requirements) and international waters of BoB, (2) A 21-day cruise originating from Chennai, India and ending in Chennai, India; conducting experiments in the international waters. US scientists and foreign scientists (Indian and Sri Lankan) participation during these cruises. |
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
We need a global class vessel to operate during monsoon wind events; endurance of the vessel, and berthing facilities for a quite number of scientists. |

Important Info on Foreign Research Clearances
|
|
Are you or any member in your science party bringing in any science equipment items which are regulated for export by the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR)?
|
Yes |
If yes, have you applied for the necessary permits through your export control office?
|
No |
Questions about ITAR/EAR regulations?
|
Comments about foreign clearance requirements or description of any other special permitting requirements (e.g., MMPA, ESA, IHA, Marine Sanctuaries, etc.) |
We will apply necessary permits through universities and federal government institutions, if it requires. |

Colombo, Sri Lanka |
Explanation/justification for requested ports and dates of intermediate stops or to list additional port stops |
We will have two separate cruises; Colombo to Colombo, and also Chennai o Chennai, India. Perhaps we have to submit another STR to show ports in India. |
