Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to https://mfp.us and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning (mfp.us). Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact mfp@unols.org for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Project Title: Advancements in geodetic and mapping techniques on the seafloor Project Status: Submitted
Principal Investigator: Matthew Cook, SIO Project Institution: UCSD
Project ID: 105586 Version #: 3
Date Submitted: 1/11/2017 4:08:00 PM Created By: Matthew Cook
Date Last Modified: 2/8/2017 3:37:00 PM URI Serial #: None
Funding Agencies: INST/UCSD/SIO - NONE - Funded
Summary of Field Work: The objective is to determine whether the structure from motion technique is a viable high-resolution method on the seafloor using ROVs and assess the accuracy compared to ocean bottom pressure measurements.

We will use the ROV Trident to take photographs and make ocean bottom pressure measurements on a seafloor monument. The camera on the ROV will be used to take video or series of photographs, which will allow us to reconstruct a 3D model (structure from motion) and measure the dimensions of the benchmarks. A mobile seafloor pressure recorder (MPR) will be used to make pressure measurements at the benchmarks for 30-minute periods. These measurements will serve as a validation for vertical measurements from the 3D structure from motion model.
Summary of Facility Requirements: We anticipate the use of the ROV Trident and a USBL or DVL and ranging system for locating our site; a concrete seafloor benchmark (supplied by our lab) and use of the A-frame for deployment; a mobile ocean bottom pressure recorder (supplied by our lab), and power and communications to the ROV; and two GPS antenna (supplied by our lab), deck space for setup, and a data stream to ship navigation
