Summary of Field Work: |
We propose a 1 day cruise on the RV Robert Gordon Sproul to introduce students to different aspects of oceanographic research and to provide samples for laboratory study during shore-based part of the course. The cruise will ideally be on a Saturday with the following elements (1) oblique plankton (bongo net) haul, (2) an otter trawl near the Coronado banks, (3) van veen grabs on Coranado bank, (4) a midwater trawl |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
Plankton net with 333 mesh net, van veen grab; otter trawl, IKMT. |

Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
We propose a 1 day cruise on the R/V RG Sproul to introduce students to different aspects of oceanographic research and to provide samples for laboratory study during shore-based part of the course. The cruise will emphasize biological diversity: (1) oblique plankton net haul, (2) an otter trawl near the Coronado banks, (3) van veen grabs at ~350-500 meters, (4) a midwater trawl (IKMT). Station 1: 32 40 N, 117 20W (water depth ~120 m) Oblique plankton net haul while heading toward Station 2. Ideally we would use a plankton net with 100 or 333 mesh Station 2: 32 40 N, 117 23W to 32 40 N, 117 24W Otter trawl (check with P. Zerowfski about net) while heading toward Station 3 Station 3: 32 40 N, 117 29W (500 m) and 117 28'30" (370 m) (and in the area as time allows) VanVeenGrabs Station 4 Midwater trawl ~ 600 m. head west and so a slow arc to head back east keeping the net at depth while not hitting Coronado Bank. |
