Summary of Field Work: |
We are proposing three cruises on Lakes Superior, Michigan and Huron (one in summer 2018, two in summer 2019). The goal of the proposed work is to investigate recent changes to benthic communities in the Laurentian Great Lakes and resulting consequences to sediment and water column geochemistry. Cruises will involve visiting 10 offshore stations across the three great lakes, collecting underwater video footage, multi-corer sediment cores and water samples. Sediment cores will be incubated and processed on board. We will make two 1-day stops at Milwaukee's waterfront Discovery World Science Center and Chicago's Shedd Aquarium to deliver science outreach programs, inducing public lectures and vessel tours. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
Project will require sediment coring and water profiling/sampling equipment as well as access to dry and wet lab facilites |

Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
The R/V Blue Heron is the only UNOLS vessel on the Great Lakes and also the most capable university-owned ship able to operate in offshore Great Lakes. This cruise will involve underwater video work along 2 transects in L. Michigan and Huron and collection of sediments and organisms for experimental work. 6 days will be required to complete the proposed work. 1 extra day is requested for outreach activities at Milwaukee's Discovery World Science Museum. |
