Ship Request

STR Management has moved to MFP

The US Academic Research Fleet is moving to Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) for scheduling initially and eventually cruise planning.

For all NEW or RESUBMITTED Projects/Ship Time Requests, go to and create a new SME. Some STRs for projects starting in 2022 and beyond have already been moved to Marine Facilities Planning ( Check your MFP Science Portal for any projects that might already be moved. If you need to make edits to projects that begin in 2022 and beyond, please contact for assistance. Be sure to indicate the Project and STR IDs that you would like to edit. For more information on getting into MFP, see the More Information button below.

Summary of Field Work: This is a request for time on Kilo Moana, continuing a multi-year effort that has involved several cruises on R/V Ka'Imikai-O-Kanaloa (KOK) and R/V Kilo Moana since ~2012.
Summary of Facility Requirements: The Kilo Moana request is primarily for bottom sampling with box corer and multicorer, mooring deployments/recoveries, CTD operations, multibeam bottom mapping, an autonomous video survey, and in-situ sediment sampling in approximately 5000 meters water depth.
Summary of other requirements and comments: Use of US Navy vessel for this project requires designation of a US scientist to served as "American Scientist In Charge" during the cruise, and needs specific approval of ONR per charter party terms. Project will require contract between operator and DORD for ship use. Work is coordinated with AUV mapping operations (not simultaneous).

Repeating Cruise?
(within same year)
No Interval:   # of Cruises:

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: Involves multiple visits to same general site by R/V KOK and R/V Kilo Moana over several years to map, sample and recover/redeploy current meter moorings. Does not require multiple visits by same ship in any one year.
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations:
Continues ongoing collaboration between SOEST and DORD on field programs in this region. Honolulu or San Diego are optimum ports.
