Summary of Field Work: |
Characterization of the biological and chemical features of the transition zone between the North Pacific subtropical gyre and the North Pacific subpolar gyre. The cruise entails a transect to and from Hawaii to approximately 47 degrees North (into the iron-limited region) along 158 degrees west. A series of underway instruments that tap into the seawater intake system will be used to define the exact location of sampling stations. Approximately 5 stations will be occupied for 24 hrs with depth profiles of the upper water column (approximately 1000m). |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
We will need a CTD/rosette, fume hood, radioisotope van, trace metal van and trace metal clean CTD/rosette/line, flow cytometer van, ability to tow a trace metal clean pump while underway, sufficient deck space of on-deck flowing seawater incubators, underway CTD, A frame for deploying radiometer, and sufficient flow of the seawater intake to run multiple instruments simultaneously. |

Other Ship(s): |
Note: I initially requested the Revelle because of size and capabilities. But, if this ship is not available, then we would be happy to use either the Kilo Moana or the Sikuliaq. The most important issue is the time window (spring summer, 2019) rather than the specific ship. |

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: |
This does not consist of a repeating cruise in one year |
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
transect cruise from 22N to at least 45N to achieve cruise objectives. Going any later in the season would preclude reaching the seasonally migrating transition zone. The cruise is already funded with a multidisciplinary group of researchers that have conducted previous cruises in this region. We require a ship with the capability to tow underway instrumentation (a tow fish) and significant underway sampling from the ship's flow through system. We originally requested the Revelle. I have modified the request now because the timing of the cruise is more important than the specific ship. Our next preference would be the KM, followed by the Sikuliaq. |

Explain Instrumentation or Capability requirements that could affect choice of ship in scheduling. |
Require use of 14C and 3H isotopes for productivity measures so require radioisotope van. Will conduct trace metal measurements so require trace metal clean winch/cable and trace metal clean van. Will also deploy an underway towed trace metal pump that pumps water to the van. May require a third van for a flow cytometer. Require a CTD/Rosette for depth profiles to ~1000m. Will bring from UW, an underway CTD to be launched while underway from a mounted position from the stern. Require use of an A frame to deploy a radiometer.
