Summary of Field Work: |
We propose two 1 day cruises on the RV Robert Gordon Sproul to introduce students to different aspects of oceanographic research and to provide samples for laboratory study during shore-based part of the course. The cruises need to be on the same weekend with the following elements (1) Plankton (bongo net) haul; (2) Otter trawl near the Coronado bank ~ 400 meters, (depth switched each day); (3) Multicore near Coronado Banks at ~700 meters, (depth switched each day); (4) Midwater trawl.; (5) Van Veen grab/s on Coronado Bank at 450-500 m. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
Plankton net with 333 mesh net, Van Veen grab; otter trawl, IKMT, Multicore |

We propose two consectutive 1 day cruises on the R/V RG Sproul to introduce students to different aspects of oceanographic research and to provide samples for laboratory study during shore-based part of the course. The cruise will emphasize biological diversity: (1) Plankton (bongo net) haul; (2) Otter trawl near the Coronado bank ~ 400 meters, (depth switched each day); (3) Multicore near Coronado Banks at ~700 meters, (depth switched each day); (4) Midwater trawl; (5) Van Veen grab/s on Coronado Bank at 450-500 m. Station 1: 32 40 N, 117 20W Oblique plankton net haul while steaming toward Station 2. Station 2: 32 40 N, 117 23W Otter trawl or Multicore while heading toward Station 3 Station 3: 32 40 N, 117 32W Multicore or Otter trawl Station 4: 32 40 N, 117 32W; head west and loop back for ~90-120 minutes Midwater Trawl Station 5: 32 40 N, 117 29W (500 m)(and in the area as time allows) Van Veen Grab |
