Summary of Field Work: |
Capture of living specimens of the pelagic tunicate Dolioletta gegenbauri to start and maintain cultures. Cruises will involve short (2-day) sampling efforts on the mid continental shelf between the 25m and 45m isobaths at 31°N. During each cruise we will locate and collect zooplankton and water and process samples shipboard. The research will require CTD casts to characterize the water column collect water and a variety of net tows using scientist provided plankton nets. |
Summary of Facility Requirements: |
We will need a CTD/rosette, A frame and J-Frame hydrowinch. We will supply the specialized plankton nets and in situ imager, but will require a benthic trawl net. Sufficient deck space for plankton and benthic net tows. Suitable temperature controlled laboratory space for wet work. Sufficient laboratory space for collecting and processing zooplankton samples. |

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: |
Needs to be in the winter when upwelling on the SAB shelf is common and doliolid blooms occur. |
Justification/Explanation for ship choice, dates,
conflicts, number of days & multi-ship operations: |
The RV Savannah is within 9 hours of the sampling sites on the mid-continental shelf of the SAB. The crew is familiar with our operational procedures and the ship is fully equipped to facilitate the proposed science mission. Because the mission is to capture live animals and return them to our labs in Savannah, Georgia, it is imperative that the ship departs and returns from Savannah, GA. |
