Summary of Field Work: |
3 cruises to the Line Islands Ridge will examine internal tide scattering from topography. Cruise 1 will deploy 3 moorings each equipped with 2 McLane Moored Profilers for 50 days. We will then occupy 19 CTD/LADCP/microstructure stations for 25 hours each and make at least 8 casts. The rosette will be equipped with the ship's CTD, ship's ancillary sensors, upward and downward looking ADCPs, and an internally recording micrconductivity instrument powered by the CTD. No bottles are needed. Also an untethered microstructure instrument will be deployed and recovered every 6 hours in between CTD profiles about 1-2 miles from the CTD station. Cruise 2 will recover and redeploy the moorings for 100 days. Cruise 3 will recover the moorings. Transit from Honolulu is about 3 days in each direction. Cruises 1-3 are requested to be 32, 12, and 12 days. Cruise 1 mooring deployments should be completed several days before the spring tide. (More details can be provided during scheduling.) |

R/V Revelle is requested for Cruises 1-3 because of the 50 and 140 kHz Doppler sonars excellent current shear measurements. It is especially important for Cruise 1.
Program start deferred to 2010 and separate cruise requests created for each cruise. Need to verify what the earliest start date in 2010 can be given that the program has been deferred [jmp - 4/28/09] |

Description of Repeating cruise requirements: |
Cruise 1 is 32 days. The first mooring is deployed on day 4. Moored profiler batteries last 50 days.
Cruise 2 is 12 days and begins 54 days after Cruise 1 begins. The first mooring is deployed on day 4 of cruise 2. Moored profiler batteries last 100 days. Moorings will be recovered and redeployed.
Cruise 3 begins 104 days after Cruise 2 begins. Moorings are recovered.
1 full day of loading and unloading for each cruise is needed. |

Revelle is requested for the 140 and 50 kHz Doppler sonars because of their excellent resolution of current shear. This is especially important for Cruise 1. |
